The 2004 Nextel Cup Series champion came into the sport with momentum. Taking only six years to move from Dwarf Car racing in Las Vegas to NASCAR's elite, Busch was hired in the year 2000 to run a full Craftsman Truck Series schedule, where he placed second in the championship standings, as well as select Nextel Cup races.
In only his second year racing in NASCAR, Busch was moved to a full time Cup ride for Jack Roush, never competing in a Busch Series race. In 2002 Kurt Busch won four races, including his first Cup win at Bristol.
Kurt Busch won the first points championship with the Chase for the Nextel Cup format, with a margin of only 8 points over Jimmie Johnson, the smallest margin of victory in Nextel Cup history.
