You could say Jimmie Johnson earned his 2006 championship. After finishing in the top ten in points for four years prior, including a fifth in his rookie year and two runner-ups, many felt that he was due.
Obviously, Johnson is no stranger to racing. He started racing motorcycles at age 4 and won his first championship at age 8. He moved on to off-road racing, winning two championships in the SCORE Desert Series.
In 1998 Johnson raced in the American Speed Association series and became Rookie of the Year. He also made his Busch Series debut that year, before running a full schedule in that series in 2000.
Jimmie Johnson made his NASCAR Cup debut with Hendrick Motorsports, and has remained with the team. He has never finished worse than fifth in his five full Cup seasons.
